New TuckDB iPhone app and Scanning Progress Update

As a small side project I thought it would be interesting to create a iPhone / iPad app showcasing some of the more beautiful items on TuckDB and TuckDB Ephemera.

Well it’s finally done and called Tuck Gallery. Search for “Tuck Gallery” in the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, or get it here:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tuck-gallery/id504408446?ls=1&mt=8

Also we’d like thank everybody for their positive feedback and emails. Many people have offered to contribute to the listings.  But because of the way we started the database we feel the need to clean up the existing 125,000+ entries before we can accept outside contributions.  Our current plan is to wait until we have scanned and edited all the cards we currently have in the database.

We are currently 69% finished scanning, and will hopefully scan every card in the base collection sometime this year. When we get closer to 100% we will look to start accepting contributions and images.

I am quite excited to find your site and am wondering how I can become a registered user? You have a complete set of Les Cinc Sens for which I have been searching for quite some time. I have only three of the five, II. L’Odorant, III. Le Gout, and IV. L’Ouie , so need I. & V. I have only been able to collect digital copies through purchasing them from a collector on line named FrenchKissed so I am unable to share them as there would be a copyright issue. Please let me know the etiquette for establishing a user identity, etc. Many thanks for taking your wonderful collection public.

    Hi Gail,

    1) Right now we are not accepting registrations at this time, we are waiting until we scan all the current cards before opening the site.

    2) As I understand copyright, anything produced before the 1920′s is now in the public domain. So all scans of Tuck Postcards are free for anybody to use as they see fit.

I’ll let you know when we are ready to open the site up.

    Thanks, Justin.

      1) I’m in awe of all the work you’ve done here. You seem to have nice scans of the few Tuck’s cards I have, and I found interesting material in the sets containing cards I have. I’d be happy to send in scans of my duplicates – just email me when you are open to that.

      2) Were all Tuck postcards first published before January 1st, 1923?

If so, the postcards themselves[1], and unaltered scans of them[2] should be in the public domain in the United States of America. However, in other countries, like the United Kingdom[3], they may not be. Copyright status is a function of the date of death of the photographer is a key element [3] in most other countries, and the date of first publication in more. Because of this, it would be helpful if these two pieces of information could be added to the record, when known.

      (3) For search purposes, a “stemming” ability in the search engine, expanding “tags” for elements in the postcards would both be helpful. I searched for “heliograph” and found nothing (even in Advanced Search). Searching for “heliographing” turned up two cards, and “signallers” turned up two more.

Thanks again for this wonderful resource!
